ELEVEN is a Valuable Tool in your Precision Ag Toolkit AND helps you meet the criteria for 4R Nutrient Soil Management
The health of your crop begins at seeding time. What fertilizer you place your seed with can make a huge difference. Traditional fertilizers like urea, anhydrous ammonia, and MAP have high salt concentrations. When placed with the seed, they can put the health of your newly planted crop at risk! ELEVEN is a specially designed fertilizer with a low salt concentration and a balanced number of macronutrients (N-P-K), along with eight others, to get plants the nutrients needed at the start of seeding.
How Higher Salt Fertilizers Affect Seedling Growth
Fertilizers with high salt content can pose a threat to seedling growth. When fertilizers with high salt concentrations are applied too close to the seed, it can result in seedling injury or death due to a lack of moisture. When the fertilizer’s salt content is higher than the natural salts found around the seedling, osmotic pressure causes water to move. It moves from lower salt concentrations in the seedling to higher concentrations in the fertilizer enriched soil. This adverse reaction to the seed placed fertilizer can often exacerbate the situation in dry or cool soil solutions. In Western Canada, when is seeding time not dry or cool?
The chart below provides an example of the levels of salt in various fertilizers.
Producers in Western Canada have placed MAP or blended fertilizers with their crops for over 50 years. Why change now? Precision agriculture technology, including the ability to accurately put fertilizer with the seed, has created the need for new and improved fertilizers that can be safely placed with the seed. ELEVEN provides the right amount of N, P for optimal germination with low salt content. The risk for seedling burn reduces with this fertilizer, and crop performance improves.
The 4 Rs:
The 4 R’s play an important role when picking the best fertilizer for your crops. Not only can it increase yields and profitability, but it will also protect the environment by putting nutrients back into the soil. What does this have to do with ELEVEN? ELEVEN aligns with the 4R principle by incorporating each aspect of the 4 Rs into the granules. The 4 Rs:
Right Source: The right fertilizer will provide nutrients to the seeds by determining the soil conditions and adjusting the fertilizer accordingly. For example, wet and flooded fields should avoid fertilizers with high levels of Nitrate.
Right Rate: The crop can only be as good as the nutrients available to it, and the rate of nutrients applied to play a significant part in bigger yields.
Right Time: Timing is everything! Especially when it comes to fertilizer application. Placing the fertilizer at the right time will provide the seeds with the correct nutrients when it’s crucial for seed growth.
Right Place: Placing the fertilizer where the seeds can find them is the final R but none-the-less important. Make sure the nutrients are available for the seeds when needed.
The benefits of ELEVEN include healthier plants, a higher crop population, and low mortality rates.
